On Monday, June 19 2023, I was honoured to be a delegate in the Vancouver School Board (VSB) Public Delegation Board Meeting to share the initiatives and activities by UHill Sustainable Everyday Club (UHill SEC) that I founded at my school, University Hill Secondary near UBC’s Vancouver campus.
Three main parts were presented during the public meeting:
- General introduction of myself and Project KELP
- Founding of UHill SEC and club initiatives during school year 2022-2023
– UHill Bottle Depot:
UHill collectively ensured about 430 bottles were recycled properly, saving many single-use bottles from landfills.
– Earth Day 2023:
We showcased facilities at UHill like places with conserved water use, energy efficient design of the building, and recycling stations across campus. The highlight is to use the water stations to stay hydrated.
– Water Filling Station Data collected throughout the school year:
On average 200 single-use plastic bottles are saved by using the station per week
– School Supplies Swap:
To create a circular system for school supplies. Many students brought their new or usable supplies to swap and some teachers donated too. It was so popular we extended it for 3 more days for students, teachers, and staff. - Proposals for next school year 2023-2024
– A co-occurrent District Wide School Supplies Swap.
– Promoting Water Filling Stations and collecting data from each school in the school district that show the students efforts with numbers that matter.
– Teacher Resources Exchange, for teachers to donate extra and exchange classroom supplies.
– Sustainable Corner at school library – designated books for sustainability for students to advance their knowledge in this sector
